Getting to Holbox on your own takes three legs: Cancún to the port town of Chiquilá by ADO bus or by car, then a ferry across the lagoon. The ferry is the fixed part: the crossing takes 25 minutes and boats leave every 30 minutes through the day, run by Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos.

The road leg is the long one. ADO runs the Cancún–Chiquilá bus; buy tickets at the Cancún bus terminal or online, and check the timetable before you plan your day, because only a few buses a day make the trip. By car you park in Chiquilá, where private lots by the pier charge by the day, and cross as a foot passenger: the car stays on the mainland, and on Holbox people get around on foot, by bike or by golf cart.

Unless you leave Cancún before dawn, you reach the island after the snorkel boats have gone: the whale-shark boat leaves Marina VIP Holbox at 6:30 AM and the reef tours pick up at 7:45–8:00 AM. That is the whole reason to sleep on Holbox.

Two companies, Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos, run passenger ferries from the pier in Chiquilá to the pier in Holbox town. The crossing takes 25 minutes and boats leave every 30 minutes, so you don't need to book ahead: buy the ticket at the pier and take the next boat.

We don't print the fare until we have confirmed this season's price with the operators; it is shown at the ticket office, in pesos. The day tours from Cancún include the ferry in their price, and the boat ride across the lagoon is short and calm compared with the open-sea trips to the sharks.

The ferry crosses the sheltered lagoon, not the open sea: it is the calm part of the journey.
