Whale shark Holbox snorkeling is one tour and one long morning. The day starts at 6:30 AM at the Marina VIP Holbox office, the yellow Mayan-style house on Avenida Caleta, with a light breakfast and a 30-minute safety briefing. There is no hotel pickup, so walk or take a golf cart there. Then the speedboat heads out to wherever the sharks are feeding that day, and that decides how long the ride is: reviewers describe anything from 1.5 to 3 hours each way.

Once the boat finds the sharks, you go in two at a time with your guide, twice each. The rest of the time you watch from the boat while the others take their turn. On the way back the boat makes what the listing calls a "secret stop" and stops at Cabo Catoche, where one reviewer in June 2026 wrote that they snorkeled with nurse sharks and stingrays before lunch. Ceviche, guacamole and mango are included, and you are back at the marina about 7 hours after the start.

If your trip falls in June or the first half of September, book the swim for the start of your stay: at the edges of the season boats can search longer, and a spare day lets you go again if the sea or the sharks don't cooperate. July and August give the best odds, and the reef at Cabo Catoche makes a calmer second day whatever the month.

Whale Shark Swimming Rules in Holbox

Whale-shark trips here run under CONANP rules. Two swimmers and a guide go in with a shark at a time, and each person gets two entries. You keep your distance, you don't touch the animal, and flash photography is not allowed. Only biodegradable sunscreen goes in the water.

The boat carries at most 10 people, so most of the time in the water you are watching from the surface while others take their turn. That is the swim you are paying for: short, close and regulated.

The two boats are closer than they look on a map. Whale sharks feed where the plankton is, not off a particular island, and one Holbox reviewer in August 2026 wrote that the area that day "was actually closer to Cancun than Holbox". The Isla Mujeres boat is shorter by half an hour, cheaper by $65 and just as small, with up to 10 people.

What decides it is where you sleep. From Cancún, the Isla Mujeres boat saves the road to Chiquilá and the ferry to Holbox. If you are already on Holbox, the Holbox boat leaves from the island at 6:30 AM and adds the stop at Cabo Catoche on the way back.
